# Anchor roadmap

Anchor remembers your Mac's window layout for every display setup and restores it when you plug in. https://anchor.qubixcode.com

Updated 2026-10-05. No dates: things ship when they're ready, and updates are free.

## Shipped

In the app today.

- **Remembers every display setup** (1.0): Each monitor is recognized by its hardware ID, so home, office and laptop-only are separate setups, even after a reboot or a different port.
- **Restores windows when you dock or undock** (1.0): About a second after displays connect or disconnect, every window goes back where it was on that setup.
- **Learns automatically** (1.0): No save button needed: Anchor keeps each setup's layout up to date as you work.
- **Lock a layout** (1.0): Freeze a setup's layout so only "Save Current Layout" changes it.
- **Never Move list** (1.0): Keep apps like Zoom or games out of it, everywhere or on one setup.
- **Restore shortcut** (1.0): Press Control-Option-Command-R to snap everything back at any time.
- **Open missing apps** (1.0): Optionally open the apps that belong on a setup when you connect it, and put them in place.
- **Won't fight you** (1.0): Anchor only moves windows on display changes or when you ask. Move a window yourself and it stays.
- **7-day free trial, 3 Macs per license** (1.0): Every feature free for a week, then a one-time purchase. Works offline after activation.
- **Automatic updates** (1.0): New versions install from inside the app. Signed and notarized by Apple.

## Next

Being built now, in this order.

- **Choose your own restore shortcut** (1.1): Pick any key combination for Restore Layout instead of Control-Option-Command-R.
- **Export and import profiles** (1.1): Save your display setups and layouts to a file, to back them up or move them to a new Mac.
- **Per-setup restore switch** (1.1): Turn automatic restoring off for one setup (say, a presentation screen) while keeping it on everywhere else.

## Later

Wanted, not scheduled yet. Tell us what you'd use most.

- **Windows back on the right Space**: Put windows back on the virtual desktop they came from, not just the right position.
- **Sync setups between your Macs**: Your layouts follow you to your other Macs through your own iCloud.
- **More actions when you connect**: For example, switch the sound output to your desk speakers when the office setup appears.

## Not planned

Things we've decided not to build, and why.

- **A Mac App Store version**: Moving other apps' windows needs the Accessibility API, which the App Store sandbox blocks, so Anchor is sold directly.
- **Window snapping and tiling**: macOS tiling, Rectangle and Magnet already do this well. Anchor focuses on putting your layout back.
- **A subscription**: Anchor is a one-time purchase, and updates are included.
- **An Anchor account**: Anchor runs entirely on your Mac. There's nothing to sign up for, and your layouts never leave it.
